Saturday, July 21 is our Carbine Match. Remember, even if you don’t own an M1 Carbine, you are invited to this match. And if you DO own an M1 Carbine, you are invited to this match and invited to lend your carbine to someone else. There will be 4 official ‘loaner’ carbines at the match, three that I own and one that the club owns (and will soon raffle off).
This match is registered with the CMP and will be run according to the rules for as-issued M1 Carbines shooting issue ammo. Because the match is open to all CMP members and we will issue ammo, there will be a $10 registration fee. Juniors shoot free.
Even though this match is very similar to the John C. Garand match, it is worth noting a few of the differences and similarities in the rules. This is a 40 shot match, and we will issue one box of GI ammunition (50 rounds). The course of fire is 10 sighters (or fewer), 10 slow prone, 10 rapid prone, 10 rapid sitting or kneeling, and 10 slow standing.
Loading the Carbine in both slow and rapid fire is a problem in competition because the bolt does not easily remain open, so please pay attention to the rules on page 51 of the CMP rulebook.
Be sure to turn in your score cards, as I will be reporting scores to the CMP. Medals will be given according to the CMP standards:
M1 Carbine Match:
| Award | Score |
|---|---|
| Gold | 352+ |
| Silver | 341-351 |
| Bronze | 325-340 |
Saturday, July 14th there is a John C. Garand Match (30 rounds) at the Joplin Rifle Pistol Club. Les Welch runs this show, and it’s a good place to experience the exact course of fire and exact distance as at Camp Perry. In other words, here’s a chance to get a zero on your rifle for use at Camp Perry. If you haven’t shot at Joplin before, see their web page for directions or call Les if you have any questions.
Les also runs the Highpower matches at Joplin, and there is an 80 shot match (plus 8 sighters) on Sunday, July 15. Cash prizes are given by classification, and the more guys show up, the more cash is given out, so this is a great match to attend.
The Mill Creek Rifle Club will host the Kansas Service Rifle Championship on Saturday July 21st, and there is a leg match followed by a John C. Garand match on Sunday, July 22. This is a real nice place to shoot, and I encourage all members to try to attend. You can shoot this match with an M1 Garand, and if you want to borrow an AR-15 from me, we can work that out too. To enter, call the match director, Sandy at 785-841-3902. Sandy will bend over backwards to help a new shooter get started, so if you’ve never attended a full-course match before, this is a good place to start.
You can shoot either day or both. Firing starts at 8am, and you need to be there before 7:30 to get squadded. A bunch of us will probably stay in the Super 8 motel, and some may even drag a travel trailer to the range. I believe a couple people even bunk in in the clubhouse occasionally, so this match can be attended pretty easily. The range is about half way between Lawrence and Kansas City, and it takes me about 2 hours and 45 minutes to drive there.
We have purchased another 3 cases of .22 ammo from the CMP. It is the Aguila standard stuff that we shot in the Rimfire match, and it is quite accurate. CMP makes this ammunition available at a very low price to CMP clubs for use by CMP members. It is not for resale. Please be reasonable in your purchases, as the concept here is to have ammo people can shoot, not to stock up the bunkers for Y2k (if you’re still planning).
As you probably know, the CMP is out of Lake City Ball .30-06 ammunition. They will continue to have Greek .30-06 ammunition for a few years, and I think it is better ammo than the Lake City. We’ll see what happens to our club allocation, because I have vouchers for 8 cases of Lake City (to support our JCG matches) that I was planning on turning in at Camp Perry (saves shipping costs). Once exercised, the Sharpshooters will have approximately 20 cases of Lake City for use in future events. We will continue to sell this to club members in small amounts (a can or less) to support your shooting.
I expect there will be a run on ammunition in the next 12 months, so you might want to think about buying a case of Greek ammo for yourself. It will never be any cheaper, and there’s no better way to acquire brass for reloading than already stuffed with powder and bullet. The club gets a 10 percent discount on surplus ammo purchases. If you want to purchase a case, or you and some buddies want to split a case, we can put together a club purchase and save you a little.
Alex Belt, club member formerly of Joplin but now Jefferson City, where he is a Tool and Weapon Examiner for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, took a 6 point leg in the June leg match held in conjunction with the State Highpower Championship at Bucksnort. Alex also won 4 points at Camp Perry last year in the M16 match. He’s well on his way towards the Distinguished badge, and that is the best news in the world: “Local Boy Makes Good”, I love it. By the way, his score of 480-6X is good for 78th on the list of the top 100 scores shot this year. Check it out on the CMP Club & Competition Tracker.
The Osage Orange Sharshooters will have dozen or more representatives at the National Trophy Matches, July 28-August 2. I believe we still have 2 beds available in the huts, so if you have a last-minute change of mind, call Les Welch at 620-429-3819. It will cost you about $110 to cover your living quarters for a week of fun. We really could use a couple more shooters for the team match, so what are you waiting for?

Don’t forget… that if you can’t make it to Camp Perry that the Bucksnort Range at Marshall MO is hosting the 2007 Planet Matches the same week.
The range, bunkhouse, camping areas, pavilion, and shower-house are all open beginning on Monday July 30 through Wed Aug 1 for camping, practice, and pick-up matches. Beginning on Thursday the 2nd there will be two 88 round Across the Course matches, August 2 and 3, an 88 round 600 yard belly match on Saturday the 4th, and a 40 round two man team match on Sunday the 5th.
A great way to get exposed to full course shooting in a much more relaxed atmosphere
